Facebook, famous for being one of the world’s leading tech companies, is once more proving that video is dominating the digital space by announcing plans to produce and license original video content.
After Facebook hired CollegeHumor’s Ricky Van Veen to manage its global creative and video strategy, Business Insider reports that Facebook intends to license original scripted, unscripted and sports videos that will belong in the new ‘Videos’ tap.
The company has already made a huge push into live streaming, and users and brands alike have taken well to Facebook Live.
But this new venture is unsurprising considering Van Veen’s background with video content producers CollegeHumor.
In a statement, Van Veen said:
“Our goal is to kickstart an ecosystem of partner content for the tab, so we’re exploring funding some seed video content, including original and licensed scripted, unscripted, and sports content, that takes advantage of mobile and the social interaction unique to Facebook. Our goal is to show people what is possible on the platform and learn as we continue to work with video partners around the world.”
This is a huge step in the world of branded video content, and a demonstration that audiences’ main focus is good content, regardless of whether it has been produced by a brand, or in association with a platform like Facebook.
